Anne Hieronymus: Works on Paper
If we could come up with a term for Hieronymus’s two-dimensional art, we might name it celestial embroidery--a phrase that describes her sense of the otherworldly, as well as her fine sense of detail.

Hieronymus is a builder not a painter. She thinks with her hands and would be bored with a master plan. She is interested in discovering what she is going to make as she makes it, because she does not know the outcome in advance.
Hieronymus makes her drawings with colored pencils because they are immediate and basic and she always, as a child, used them for drawing.Her ground is gesso over Japanese paper, prized for both its dazzling white brilliance and a wrinkled texture.
The subject is often a collage of her own making, a debris field of torn and repurposed printed paper, stickers, decorations and broken up press-type. She sees the reworking from collage to drawing as an opportunity for transmutation, with each iteration losing and gaining in unexpected ways.

ANNE HIERONYMUS: WORKS ON PAPER
A Virtual Solo Exhibition
New York, NY – Cross Contemporary Partners is proud to exhibit works on paper by Anne Hieronymus starting Saturday, July 3, 2021 on view 24/7 at the Cross Contemporary Partners Virtual Gallery.
This online exhibition displays Hieornymus’ drawings and collages in a digital gallery that has the illusion of 12 foot high ceilings and 150 running feet of wall space. Hieronymus defines herself as a formalist, and her visual repertoire embraces and intermixes widely different styles in these carefully executed and intricate works.
This exhibition of a selection of collages and drawings, is described by the artist as debris fields of torn and repurposed paper decorations, printed wrapping paper, stickers and broken up press-type. Some have been transmuted into the large colored pencil drawings also on view. Hieronymus makes her drawings on large sheets of bright white gessoed paper, and the pencils are shaded from deep black to very light pastels. Layers of stylistically foreign visual material intermingle and overlap in an explosion of activity, almost chaotic; that surprisingly creates an unexpected and reassuring inner calm.
Originally known for her work as a makeup artist in the film industry, she ultimately decided to return to art school; Anne Hieronymus received her BFA in sculpture from the Art Institute of Chicago in 2006, and she continued her studies at the Claremont Graduate School where she earned an MFA with honors in 2009. Anne Hieronymus has participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions in diverse venues such as LAAA/Gallery 825, Los Angeles (2018, 2014, 2011, 2009), Brea Art Gallery, Brea CA (2015), FOCA, Los Angeles (2012), Orange County Center for Contemporary Art, Santa Ana, CA (2009), Center for the Arts, Pomona, CA (2009), Peggy Phelps Gallery, Claremont, CA (2007, 2008), Basswerks Gallery, Los Angeles, CA (2004).
